February 10, 2024: The Hall-Dale Bulldogs avenged their only loss of the regular season by defeating Spruce Mountain to capture the 2024 Mountain Valley Conference girls basketball championship at Lewiston High School.
Hall-Dale jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter on the scoring of 5’5” senior guard Hayden Madore, who had 9 points, including 3 from beyond the arc. Spruce Mountain’s only points came from a basket by senior forward Elizabeth Grondin.
The Phoenix defense stiffened in the second quarter, holding the Bulldogs to just 5 points. Their 12 points cut the lead to 21-14 at the half.
Spruce Mountain came out after halftime hoping to cut into the lead, but could only muster 4 points on a couple of hoops by freshman Maddie Grimaldi. Hall-Dale scored 9 points in the quarter to lead 30-18 after 3 periods.
The Phoenix made a valiant effort in the 4th on the hot shooting of senior guard Aubrey Kachnovich, who scored all of her 9 points in that stanza. The Phoenix outscored Hall-Dale 19-14 in the quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to hold off the run and take the title with a final score of 44-37.
Leading scorers for Hall-Dale were Hayden Madore with 12 points and Jade Graham with 11.Torie Tibbets and KJ Greenhalgh each chipped in with 7.
Spruce Mountain was lead by Grimaldi and Kachnovich, who each scored 9 points. Jay Pingree added 7.
The two teams now turn their attention the state tournament. The 17-1 Bulldogs are ranked #2 in Southern Maine Class C and will face the winner of the Winthrop/Old Orchard Beach preliminary game.
The 16-2 Phoenix are in the #3 seed in Southern Maine Class B and will square off against #6 Yarmouth.
