February 10: The top-seeded Mt. Abram Roadrunners captured the 2024 Mountain Valley Conference Championship, defeating Maranacook 77-67 at Lewiston High School. The two teams had split their two regular season games, with each team winning at home.
The 16-2 Roadrunners jumped out to an 18-12 first quarter lead with all 5 of their starters scoring. Senior guard Brandon Chilton drained a couple of threes, including a buzzer beater, to pace the Black Bears.
In the second stanza, Mt. Abram extended their lead by 2 points to take a 37-29 lead at intermission. Junior forward Logan Dube scored 8 points in the quarter for the Roadrunners while 6’3” senior center Robbie Vivenzio scored 6 points for the Bears.
In the third period, Mt. Abram rode the hot hand of senior guard Cam Gray, who drained 2 from behind the arc and scored 8 points. Freshman guard Jack Fontaine dropped in 7 points in the period for Maranacook, but the Roadrunners were able to extend their lead to 57-44.
Maranacook picked up the intensity in the last quarter and cut into the lead, but some clutch foul shooting by Mt. Abram and stellar play by senior Payton Mitchell helped fend off the rally. Mitchell scored 13 of his team-leading 26 points in that crucial period. Despite being outscored 23-20, the Roadrunners made 10 of 12 fourth quarter free throws to seal the 10-point victory.
Dube was second in scoring for Mt. Abram with 17 points. Gray added 16 points, including 3 baskets from deep. Bryce Wilcox chipped in with 9 points.
Chilton, despite spraining his ankle, returned to the game to pace the Black Bears with 16 points, while senior guard Keagan McClure and Fontaine scored 14 each. Vivenzio chipped in with 10.
Mt. Abram finished the regular season as the #1 seed in Southern Maine Class C and awaits the winner of the prelim game between MVC rivals Dirigo and Madison.
Maranacook, 15-3 and rated #2 in Northern Maine Class B, will play the winner of the Bucksport and Mount Desert Island preliminary game.
